Salute to Albertina Walker

On October 8th, gospel music lost a legend in pioneer Albertina Walker. Dubbed the "Queen of Gospel Music" Ms. Walker paved the way for many gospel legends.

At the tender age of 22 she started the incomparable group "The Caravans". During its decade of existence, such greats as James Cleveland, Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood and Inez Andrews claimed membership in the elite group, earning its leader the title "Star Maker".

In her more than 6 decades in the gospel music industry, Ms. Walker recorded 60 albums, had 5 gold records ("Please Be Patient With Me", "I Can Go To God In Prayer", "The Best Is Yet to Come", "Impossible Dream", and "Joy Will Come"), 10 Grammy nominations, 1 Grammy Award (1995), 3 Stellars and 3 Doves and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2001).

While Ms. Walker didn't have a new solo project on the stands when she made her transition to Glory, The Caravans came together in 2006 for a reunion album, "Paved The Way".

No truer words were ever spoken about the legend laden group - especially the great Ms. Albertina Walker.

UPHOLD ME HOLY SPIRIT

By Judy Ibezim

It is such a scary thing to see how us "so-called saints of God" letting our guards down and falling like flies to the lust of our flesh. What are the lusts of the flesh? I'm so glad you asked. Galatians 5:19-21 lists them: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying, murder, drunkenness, and reveling.

It is now far past the time for those of us who claim to represent Christ to actually re-present Him in our lives by letting our light shine before men that they will see Him in us and glorify the father. (Matthew 5:16)

We can't really blame anyone but ourselves. James 1:14 - 15 says that every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived it brings forth sin and sin when it is finished brings forth death.

I know, I know! The economy has caused some major financial turmoil in our lives BUT GOD still sits on the throne and we still have to trust Him even when He sometimes can't be traced. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the lord, which made heaven and earth. (Psalms 121:1-2) There is no other help that I know of. We must begin to use our weapons of spiritual warfare. What are those weapons? I am glad you asked again:

1. Prayer
2. Fasting
3. Faith (believing)
4. Praise

I need thee, oh Lord, my Savior in every test, trial and storm. Please bless me and uphold me Holy Spirit. I come to thee today and forevermore. I will continually praise thee for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are they works; and that I [my soul] knoweth right well (Psalms 139:14).

Hear our prayer oh Lord.

My Secret Place

By Shana Bibbs-Hampton

The tears roll down my face, burning my skin like a wildfire. I seek shelter as I run to hide from the grief and obvious pain that I feel. Like death inhabits the cemetery, resentment is in my heart. My vision is blurred as I am unable to focus to find meaning behind the agony that has saturated my very being. I want to be set free from this bondage that tortures my soul.

I dwell in my hiding place, avoiding the embarrassment encamping me. I don't want to appear weak but my spirit is broken, embraced by torment that whispers solemnly in my ear. I find myself going in circles as I thirst for strength to overcome my emotions. My tears are a release but I am ashamed of the vulnerability that comes with them. I want to be comforted by someone with understanding and compassion in their heart but I have yet to find that one.

I find ease in my secret place yet I am still alone. This is a terrible feeling but I sense that Your love is near. I desire to be healed from the wounds of life's struggles. I attempt to leave the darkness that occupies my mind. The tears continue to linger, creating a miniature river that filters my sorrows. I recoil from pity for I need Your love to infiltrate me. I wish for Your love to shine like a light to restore life that has been sucked away by turmoil and stress.

I feel your presence; as I turn around I see Your face. You are more beautiful than I pictured in my dreams. Lord, it's me, the one who is so unworthy and unfaithful; yet You take me into Your arms. I struggle to hold back my tears as You console me. I cling to You as You wipe my tears away making them Your own. You speak softly, telling me that You will never leave me; You will always find Your way back in my life no matter how I attempt to hide. I rise, leaving my frustrations, anxieties and pain in my secret place with my Father. He came to me and lifted all my burdens just like He promised. I am now renewed.

Pick Immune-Boosting Foods

Are you surrounded by coughs and sneezes? From October through April, flu season is in full swing. The best way to prevent both the seasonal flu and H1N1 is to make sure you and your loved ones, especially children and the elderly, are vaccinated.

Good nutrition is essential to keeping your immune system strong. Nutrients important to supporting your body's ability to fight infections include:

Protein (lean meats, dairy, nuts and tofu)
Vitamin A (sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens, eggs, fortified milk)
Vitamin C (citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruit)
Vitamin E (wheat germ, whole-grain products, seeds and nuts)
Zinc (lean red meat, poultry, beans, nuts and fortified cereal)

Stay healthy by following a balanced eating plan with plenty of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meat and low-fat and fat-free dairy.

For more information on flu vaccination, visit www.flu.gov/.

Produced by ADA's Strategic Communications Team
Get Fit Tennessee is a statewide awareness initiative created by Gov. Phil Bredesen to encourage Tennesseans to think about making healthier choices and address the rising epidemic of Type 2 diabetes and risk factors that lead to diabetes, such as obesity. The initiative is aimed at educating both adults and children that Type 2 diabetes can be delayed, or even prevented with modest lifestyle changes like increasing physical activity and eating healthier.

Money Matters
A Financial Prayer

Money, bills, money, bills; taking from this bill to pay the full amount of that bill; calling bill collectors for an extension; and praying to God for a financial miracle...what should we do? Finally we ask the question "will there ever be enough money to pay all these bills?"

As God's children, we know we can ask Him for anything: Matthew 21:22 states "and all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive". Philippians 4:6 says "be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." Before we ask for a financial blessing, we should make sure we have aligned ourselves financially with the word of God.

How do we do that? The first thing God said we should do is to bring all of our tithes and offerings to His house. Malachi 3:10-11 clearly states what our financial responsibilities are to Him:

"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts."

Wow, what a powerful scripture because not only does God instruct us, but He also tells us how He will respond. When we pay our tithes, He destroys financial yokes for us. Prayer is the most powerful tool we can use to (1) get God's attention and (2) cause the enemy to flee. Psalm 61:1 states "hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer"; while James 4:7 says "submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." God answers prayers when He sees our belief and obedience to His will, way and word. Don't be afraid to pray and ask God for anything within His will, including money. But the prerequisite is to be obedient, pay tithes and give an offering. God is our father which means He will answer our prayers. I love having a daddy like that, don't you?

Living Single

In All Things.......

The month of November puts everybody in the mind of being especially thankful. In all of the holiday programs, services and family gatherings there is always thanks given for life, health and strength - all of the "good" things of life.

I, too am grateful for family, the fact that I am a homeowner, that my sons are good people, etc. but I have learned to express gratitude for those things in life that most would consider bad.

(1) ...being a single mom. There are precious memories that my sons and I have created that never would have existed if their father was a major part of their lives.

(2) ...having an absentee father myself. If my father had been in my life while I was growing up, my grandfather wouldn't have had to step in as a father figure and I would have missed the many nuggets of wisdom that still guide me today.

(3) ...my divorce. While I wish my marriage had lasted until death, I am becoming increasingly aware that not being married has made me grow in ways that I never would have if I still had that spouse.

(4) ...the failed relationships. None have ended badly; I still have great friendships with most. The important thing is that I learned a little more about myself in every one.

(5) ...I work 3 jobs and run a small business. Life requires a hectic schedule, but I thank God that each job gives insight into totally different sets of people and provide great experiences that I otherwise would miss.

Take the time to evaluate those things in your life that you complain about and even get depressed over and find the good in them. I am convinced that I have joy in life because even in my struggles, God is good. I read recently: "Everything will be okay in the end. If things aren't okay - it's not the end." ....and for this I give thanks!
